Chapter Eleven

“HOW’S IT going?”

Sen filled a shadow with crosshatches and nodded. “Pretty good. All the detail illustrations are finished, and I’m closing in on the interiors.” He stayed hunched over the drafting table but tingled in anticipation of Morgan’s touch.

“Glad to hear it.” Morgan came to stand next to Sen and laid a hand on his back. He studied the drawing and gave Sen an approving look. “And I’m glad you pushed to draw one of the upper bedrooms. They’re as intrinsic to the hotel and its history as the opulent stuff and just as important to remember. Maybe more, given those who lived in the plain spaces were kept hidden, but were essential.”

“Yeah, totally. Aesthetically I appreciate the simplicity and feel of these rooms, but I also like bringing attention to what they represent. Thanks.” Sen craned around to smile at Morgan. “Look behind you.”

Morgan lifted his hand, turned, and then rested his other hand on Sen’s shoulder. As if breaking contact for too long were impossible, and as if he weren’t aware of doing it.

Sen had hung each completed illustration on one wall using binder clips and pushpins. That way they were protected, and he could study them while he worked through the next drawings, so the whole series maintained continuity.

“Whoa. They’re really impressive, displayed like that. Gives me an idea of how to group them in the lobby. I originally thought to hang them in a line on either side of the entryway, but seeing this, I think they should be grouped salon style. Maybe over the reception desk?” Morgan squeezed Sen’s shoulder. “You do excellent work, and you’re gonna make me look excellent with the boss for finding you.”

Sen threw an exaggerated point-and-wink gesture. “You’re welcome.”

Morgan got the cherub from the table and took it to the picture for comparison. “This is unexpected.”

“Hmm? What’s unexpected?” Sen capped his pens and stood. He stretched both arms overhead and yawned, and caught Morgan staring at his exposed tummy and hip dents. So he deepened the stretch, arched his back, and rolled his neck. Then he pivoted on his feet and grabbed the next illustration to hang with the others.

When Morgan didn’t answer, Sen asked, “Good unexpected or bad unexpected?”

“Good. Very good.” Morgan sounded distracted and watched Sen twitch his shirt back down. After a moment he referred to the drawing. “This part here.”

Sen had recreated his doodle of two cherubs swathed in bunting in the bottom right corner of the page. All the other required aspects were there. He composed the drawing in two main columns, with front, three-quarter, and side views of the cherub to the left, and on the right a lighter background picture of the staircase with the cherubs highlighted.

“Good is good. It just felt like it belonged, and once I had the pencil sketch down, I knew that call was right. Really pulled the whole thing together—made it more alive than a technical drawing.”
